During the time of my emerging elementary years, I recall having to look up vocabulary words as one of my daily assignments.  There will always be new vocabulary words on the board to research.  I had to learn how to spell it, explain the meaning of the word, and use it in a sentence.  I studied every single word because my teacher will randomly pick any word from the list and ask me questions. I had to prepare myself all the time for this impromptu moments.  This activity built -up my vocabulary skills, learned the meaning, learned how to spell it, and learned how to use it in a sentence.  We also reviewed previously learned vocabulary words as well as learned new ones daily.  I also recall my teacher always reading us a story daily, but I hated it when she does not finish reading the entire book and continues on the next day.

  1. Vocab journals for me was very helpful in developing the English language. Growing up, I was just fascinated with words! And with my 2nd language, there was so much to learn. So, I took the initiative to actually create my own vocab journal and I think it really helped with how I learned English. :)

  2. I've been through what Antonina mentioned. I had the same kind of teacher that likes to put up many words and randomly pick the vocabulary words. I think this kind of trick helps develop student's vocabulary.

  3. I remembered those days too. It did help me and kept me motivated to study my vocabulary words.

I sometimes finish reading read aloud to my students the following day because we don't have time to finish it. I see my students getting excited to know the ending or what's going to happen, but I had to keep them guessing till the following day. What I do is I have them predict or think of what the ending might be or what might happen. The following day we discuss it and continue reading.
