"Words were medicine: they were magic and invisible.  They came from nothing into sound and meaning.  They were beyond price; they could neither be bought nor sold."

-N. Scott Momaday (Kiowa), House Made of Dawn, 1968

My view on this is words bring out emotions when it is said they appear out of nowhere and not seen but yet the impact is so great.  From thought, sound developed to connect concepts and meaning.  To those who place value on words, it is priceless when someone says things to you from the heart.

  1. I found this quote to be fascinating, too, Toni. Language is so essential and so unique to human beings. Unlike animals, humans have the ability to speak life or death to each other. If we think about it and believe in the Biblical Creation story- words brought the entire universe to life! In the Gospels, Christ himself was called "logos" or the Word. And I think it's very much applicable to us now- we can heal, strengthen, and care for our students, and to each other, through words. The meaning of these is so deep, I am mind-blown!

  2. Toni,
I didn't know that we have the same reflection title. I like that you shared your point of view on the quote. Language touches every part of our lives. It gives words to our thoughts, voice to our ideas, and expression to our feelings. Language makes us uniquely human.
